A fresh fruit and vegetable market run by Sunbury Community Harmony Food Co-operative has its official launch this Saturday to offer budget-friendly food.
Initially promoted by the co-operative as a ‘members only’ market when it first opened four weeks ago, organisers say it’s now open to all. However, eligible members receive a discount on purchases. Click here for membership information.
“We can only accept a limited number of members in each round, and there will be several registration rounds throughout the year,” states the co-operative.
This Saturday’s market will feature cooking demonstrations, a coffee cart, BBQ, kids’ face painting, and live music thanks to funding from Hume City Council.
Food prices advertised by the Sunbury Community Harmony Food Co-op include:
- Strawberry punnet: $3.35 each
- Mandarins: $3.60kg
- Royal gala apples: $3.35kg
- Brussel sprouts: $8.05kg
- Cucumbers: $4.60kg
- Potatoes: $2.16kg
The non-profit market has received a start-up grant from the state government, and has the support of Goonawarra Neighbourhood House, Sunbury Aboriginal Corporation, Sunbury Cobaw Community Health, and the Multicultural Resources Hub. Grant money has been used to apply for permits, hire a coordinator, and buy equipment.
The market is held at the Aboriginal Corporation’s Macedon St premises (the former court house / museum), Saturdays 10.30am to 12.30pm.
