A proposals by MAB Corporation to develop land 140-204 Western Avenue, Westmeadows, into an industrial estate is worrying residents who live near the area, and they have the support of Hume City Councillors.
A public consultation on the plan opened on 19 April and closes 5pm Wednesday 10 May 2023.
A council agenda (see page 121) notes that the land forms part of what is locally known as ‘the buffer’ between the Tullamarine Closed Landfill and the Westmeadows residential area and has previously been the subject of several abandoned plans to develop the land.
Council states that the operation and post-closure management of the adjoining former landfill, along with planning processes to determine the future use and development of the subject land, have been the “cause of significant and ongoing stress to the local community for over two decades”.
Hume City states: “Hume City Council is disappointed in the Victorian Government’s decision to refer the Western Avenue rezoning and development proposal through the Department of Transport and Planning’s Development Facilitation Program.
“This has effectively taken the decision for the future use and development of the site out of council’s control – a true hit to local democracy and local decision making.
“Council’s position on developing the site has not changed: we remain firmly opposed to the proposed development for several reasons.”
