Sunbury residents are being urged to share their daily transport struggles as part of a major new campaign pushing for better connections across Melbourne’s north.
The Connect Melbourne’s North campaign – launched by seven northern councils including Hume – aims to highlight how poor transport options are affecting local communities and businesses, and to press for urgent government investment in roads, rail and public transport.
Residents can visit www.connectmelbournesnorth.com to share their stories, from long waits for buses and traffic gridlock on roads in and out of Sunbury, to limited options for reaching jobs, schools and medical appointments.
The campaign brings together the municipalities of Hume, Banyule, Darebin, Merri-bek, Mitchell, Nillumbik and Whittlesea. While each council faces different challenges – from inadequate bus services in rural towns to disconnected cycling routes in the suburbs – all are united in calling for better, more reliable transport for Melbourne’s fast-growing north.

Among the improvements being sought are:
- A more efficient and connected bus network
- Investment in key rail projects such as the Upfield Line extension and Wollert rail
- Safer walking and cycling links across council areas
- Better east–west connections to jobs and services
- Improved access to major health infrastructure such as the Northern Hospital
- Investment in major road upgrades, including the Hume Freeway extension and OMR/E6 corridor.
Sunbury residents, businesses and commuters are encouraged to add their voice here.
