A petition opposing plans by Hi-Quality to build a waste-to-energy incinerator in Bulla has closed with 332 signatures.
The petition, backed by Sarah Mansfield MP (Green Party), was tabled in the State Legislative Council on 10 September – Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny is to respond by 10 October 2024.
Hi-Quality’s proposal, which has yet to receive the necessary permits, include plans to build a waste-to-energy plant and expand activities at its 256 hectare site in Sunbury Rd. A waste-to-energy plant burns waste to create steam that drives a power generating turbine.
The petition states that “…thanks to industry lobbying and greenwash, some are convinced that waste-to-energy incinerators are the clean alternative to landfill”.
Ms Mansfield, the MP for Geelong, says: “The proposed incinerator site on Sunbury Road in Bulla will be located only one kilometre away from the nearest residential area, and will add an additional 400 to 800 trucks to local roads a day.
“This is a prime example of this greenwashing and should not be permitted to proceed.”
The EPA is currently reviewing Hi-Quality’s application and is expected to announce its decision by the end of the year.
