Hello and welcome to the weekly news wrap from Sunbury Life for Friday May 23 2025. My name is Steve Hart.

A handful of Sunbury residents protested outside the electorate office of MP Josh Bull Tuesday to express concerns over the newly introduced Emergency Services Volunteer Fund Levy, which many are calling a new tax. 

The protest was  part of a broader statewide movement angry at the new tax that will appear on rates notices. The $261 fire levy replaces the Fire Services Property Levy.

With temperatures dropping, Greater Western Water is advising Sunbury residents to prepare for potential frozen pipes. The water company recommends insulating exposed pipes.  Taking these precautions can help avoid costly repairs. 

Two people have been injured following a traffic collision on Horne Street on Monday, 19 May. Fire crews responded to the incident at 6:37 AM, with emergency services arriving promptly at the scene. Police say two people suffered minor injuries.

The newly re-established Sunbury Lions Club held its first meeting this week, offering a chance for community members to meet and greet new members. The club, which had been inactive for two years, is now welcoming volunteers and supporters to join up. 

A detailed breakdown of where council spends your money is to be published following a request by Hume City Councillor Sam Misho.

He wants a detailed breakdown of the suburb-level allocation of council spending for the next five years, to ensure funding is distributed equitably across all suburbs within the municipality. 

Councillors have also endorsed a new internal resolution procedure to address disputes among councillors.

Kismet Park Primary School has launched a new community-driven initiative encouraging Sunbury businesses to invest in the education and development of local students. The initiative seeks to foster partnerships between the school and local businesses to enhance educational opportunities and resources for students. Businesses interested in participating are invited to engage with the school to explore potential collaborations. 

Children attending Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School are being urged to walk to school as part of the state’s Park It scheme to get kids out of cars and on their feet. The school now has a drop off zone at the car park behind the Global Learning Centre.

The Boilerhouse Theat re Company is holding an information night  for those who would like to be involved in its upcoming production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The one-hour meeting will be held at The Boilerhouse Community Arts Centre, Jacksons Hill,  on Monday 9 June  from 6.30pm for one hour.

And if you fancy seeing a show, Nightfall with Edgar Allan Poe is being performed at the Boilerhouse Community Arts Centre on June 13 and 14.
