Hello and welcome to this week’s podcast from Sunbury Life. Today is Friday May 9, 2025 and my name is Steve Hart.

A fresh fruit and vegetable market run by Sunbury Community Harmony Food Co-operative has its official launch this Saturday to offer budget-friendly food.

Initially promoted by the co-operative as a ‘members only’ market when it first opened four weeks ago, organisers say it’s now open to all. However, eligible members receive a discount on purchases.

This Saturday’s market will feature cooking demonstrations, a coffee cart, BBQ, kids’ face painting, and live music thanks to funding from Hume City Council.

Five retailers suffered property damage and theft on Sunday 4 May costing traders thousands of dollars.

Hume Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating a series of burglaries at Gap Rd retailers Ethnic Spice Shop, White Horns Butcher, The Hidden Florist, Mutts Cutts and Beauty at JNM.

It is claimed traders are out of pocket to the tune of $15,000 each as a result of the burglaries.

Security videos appear to show two young people ransacking a store and it is thought a blue Mitsubishi Lancer was used as a get away vehicle.

The next Meet the Mayor session is being held on Wednesday May 14. Joining Sunbury Cllr Jarrod Bell will be Cllr John Haddad.

This is your chance to catch one of your local councillor in person to share thoughts, start a conversation, or get to know more about your representatives.

Meet the Mayor will be held at the Homestead Community and Learning Centre, Roxburgh Park, 30 Whiltshire Dr, on Wednesday 14 May, 11.30am to 1pm. And there’s no need to book.

It appears motorists using Bulla Rd at around 8pm Monday 28 April drove through manure that apparently fell off a lorry onto the road. Motorists inadvertently spread it across the Tarmac as they drove through the sludge.

Drivers caught up in a horse poo spillage vented their frustration on social media, with some saying their cars stink – despite being cleaned.

Vic Roads says it sent a team to clean the road.

A vandalised public toilet that Hume City Council has kept boarded up for months is to be repaired.

A civic-minded Sunbury Life reader tipped us off to the closed loo in Shields St a few weeks back, saying mourners and visitors to the nearby Sunbury Cemetery are regularly seen queuing to use the one remaining unisex loo.

Following enquiries to council, a spokesperson says the damaged toilet will be repaired in “…the coming weeks”.

Sunbury bus station is getting a make-over with upgrades including new displays to provide real time information on bus services, safer pedestrian crossings, and an extra bus layover area to ease congestion in Brook St. New tactile ground surface indicators, lighting and CCTV will also be installed.

Bus services will continue as usual, states Public Transport Victoria, but there may be some changes to bus bays. Signs will be in place to direct people to the correct bus bay.

Public question time at Hume City Council is always worth keeping an eye on. Sunbury Life has printed the full Q & A from the Monday April 28 meeting.

Questions cover the closure of the Sunbury Visitor Centre, sunbury swimming pool closures, and the prospect of free skip bins to dump your rubbish.

Finally this week, The next step in seeing the Sunbury Lions Club back in town takes place Wednesday 21 May at the Sunbury Social Club, Riddell Rd, starting at 7pm. Anyone interested in supporting the club is welcome to attend to ask questions and find out more. Call organiser Gerry Monaghan 0417 797727
