In a well-planned first meeting of the newly-elected crop of Hume City councillors on Tuesday 19 November, Jarod Bell, who retained his seat by 16 votes, was elected as the city’s mayor for a one-year term.
Cllr Bell was nominated by Cllr Carly Moore and seconded by Cllr Karen Sherry.
Cllr Bell’s deputy is former mayor Naim Kurt. He was nominated by Cllr Daniel English and second by Cllr Moore. Cllr Kurt accepted the role.
Cllr Bell spoke for 10 minutes, with emotion clearly in his voice, before a full public gallery that included Sunbury MP Josh Bull.
“As we step forward into this new term I am filled with excitement and determination,” said Cllr Bell. “We have hard work ahead, but I have never been more hopeful. To the people of Hume, we are here for you, we will fight for you.”
The last time a city mayor came from Sunbury was when Jack Ogilvie held the role in 2008/9. Mr Ogilvie passed away this month having spent 26 years as a councillor. However, his achievement, passing, and last week’s funeral, were not mentioned during the meeting.
Cllrs Bell was also re-elected to the council’s audit & risk committee.
