Contractors working for Melbourne Airport are due to start altering Sunbury Rd, Bulla, in the coming months as part of the airport’s plan to build a third runway.
The new runway was approved by government last year, works will start this year, and it is expected to be completed in 2031. The project is expected to create 51,000 jobs.
As part of the preparatory work, a temporary intersection will be built between Wildwood Rd and Oaklands Rd roundabouts for construction vehicles entering and leaving the airport grounds.
Changes to the junction will include temporary traffic lights, road widening, resurfacing, and improved lighting. Works in this area will be completed next year.
The airport states that traffic management measures will be in place, including reduced speed limits. The timing of the project is still to be confirmed.
Meanwhile, airport managers are developing a noise amelioration plan and program for eligible homes and public facilities it deems to be most affected by the opening of the third runway. Once completed, the plan will be sent to the federal government.
It is also working with Hume City Council, the state government, and Brimbank City Council on “understanding existing planning and building standards”.
Public consultation will take place throughout 2025/26.
