Sunbury locals with a love of gardening and nature are being invited to take part in Hume City Council’s Gardens for Wildlife program – an initiative designed to help residents create gardens that attract and support native wildlife.
Through the program, residents, schools, and local businesses can apply for a free one-hour garden visit from one of council’s volunteer Garden Guides. During the visit, participants can chat about ways to make their garden more wildlife-friendly, and receive a small gift as a thank-you.
A few weeks later, they’ll also receive a personalised report with suggestions for improving their garden’s habitat potential along with eligibility to receive free native seedlings.
Garden Guides are community volunteers who are passionate about local flora and fauna and are keen to help others bring birds, butterflies, and even frogs back into their backyards.
Council encourages people of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures to volunteer, helping share the wildlife gardening message across the city’s diverse communities.
Garden visits can be arranged any day of the week, and applications are managed online via Council’s SmartyGrants system. As spots are limited each round, early applications are encouraged.
Those interested in applying for a garden visit or volunteering as a Garden Guide can find more information on Hume City Council’s website.
