Council launches soccer survey

Just over a year ago former Hume City councillor Joseph Haweil bemoaned the shortage of soccer pitches in the city.

In February 2024 he said council had spent $12m on a Craigeiburn softball court that’s used by 140 players, while at the same time making little provision for the those wanting to play soccer.

He said decisions on where sporting facilities are built, and the sports council caters for, do not take into account what people want.

Council has now launched a soccer survey, and confirmed it is the fastest-growing sport in the city.

“The Hume football plan is all about understanding how football is currently played in our community, and planning for its future,” states council.

“With football becoming an increasingly popular sport in Hume, the council recognises the need for a structured, long-term approach to meet the demands of our growing and diverse population.”

It’s survey, which closes on Sunday 25 May, will – states council – help ensure it is equipped to respond to the evolving needs of the community.
