More than 2,500 trees have been delivered by Great Western Water (GWW) to 52 primary and secondary schools, including four in Sunbury as part of Schools Tree Day on Friday 26 July.
The utility company says the western region has the lowest tree canopy cover in Melbourne at 5.5%, compared to the eastern suburbs which sits at almost 26%.
GWW’s GM of strategy and partnerships, Kessia Thomson, says the initiative will help raise awareness of the benefits of green spaces.
Ms Thomson says the donation of up to 50 trees to each selected school will provide more shade, canopy cover, and animal habitats.
“Initiatives such as these provide students with an opportunity to learn in an active environment while highlighting the important role they can play in creating a brighter, greener future,” she says.
The lucky local schools are Kismet Park Primary, Sunbury West Primary, St Anne’s Primary, and Holy Trinity Primary.
GWW’s Trees for Schools program is a partnership with the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, and local councils.
