Funding boost for young athletes

Hume City Council’s Sports Aid Grant Program is now open, giving young people the chance to access funding support for sport and physical activity.

The program has been updated this year to encourage a broader mix of applicants, with a particular focus on helping more girls and young women get involved in sport.

Last year the scheme attracted a record number of applications, with 150 young people receiving grants. Basketball, soccer, swimming, tennis and cricket topped the list of sports supported.

Of those funded in 2024/25, most (98%) received a Sport Play Grant, 15% identified as living with a disability, and two-thirds of applicants were male.

Two types of funding are available in the new round:

  • Sport Pathway Grant (up to $1,000): to help young athletes represent Hume at regional, state, national or international events.
  • Sport Play Grant (up to $250): to support those experiencing financial hardship to get active in community sport.

To be eligible, applicants must be 24 years or under, live in Hume, and meet the specific criteria for one of the categories.

More information, including how to apply, is available on the Council website: Sports Aid Grant Program – Hume City Council.
