Have your say on pet ownership

Hume City Council is calling on Sunbury residents to help shape the future of pet ownership and animal management in the city via a community survey.

The survey is part of a review of the Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP), a strategic document that guides how the council manages cats, dogs, and other domestic animals. The updated plan will cover the years 2026 to 2030 and is required under Victoria’s Domestic Animals Act 1994.

Locals are encouraged to provide their input on a range of topics, including responsible pet ownership, possible changes to local animal laws, and whether a cat curfew should be introduced across Hume.

Submissions are open until Sunday, 22 June 2025. Feedback can be submitted through an online survey, by email, post, or over the phone. Council officers will also be available at several local shopping centres to speak directly with residents and answer questions about the plan.

Pop-up consultation events will be held at:

  • Broadmeadows Central – Friday, 13 June, 11:30 am to 1:30 pm
  • Sunbury Square Shopping Centre – Saturday, 14 June, 11:30 am to 1:30 pm
  • Merrifield City Centre – Saturday, 21 June, 10:30 am to 1:30 pm

Council says all community feedback will be used to help draft the new Domestic Animal Management Plan. A final version will be shared for public review before it is formally adopted.
