Historic abuse claims linked to Sunbury pool

Law firm Maurice Blackburn is appealing for anyone with information about historical sexual abuse at the Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre to contact its lawyers.

The firm has launched an appeal for witnesses as part of its investigations on behalf of a woman who was allegedly abused by a former worker at the Ligar St pool during the 1980s. The alleged perpetrator has since died, says the law firm.

On behalf of the un-named woman, Maurice Blackburn has filed court proceedings against pool operator Hume City Council, saying it should have done more to protect young children.

Maurice Blackburn lawyer Shauna Stanley says: “Our client was a young girl when she was abused at Sunbury pool. That abuse has had a lasting and devastating impact on her life.

“We urge anyone who thinks they may have seen or heard anything related to potential abuse at Sunbury pool to get in touch.

“We are particularly interested in the period between 1975 and 1991. All calls and emails will be treated confidentially.”

Ms Stanley says in cases of historical abuse, sometimes just one small piece of information can make a huge difference to its investigations.

“Any documentary evidence like photos or staff records may also be very helpful for our inquiries into this abuse,” she says.

In a statement, a Hume City Council spokesperson said: “Council is aware of the tragic allegations made against an employee of the former Shire of Bulla, which ceased operations in 1994.

“This matter is subject to legal proceedings and as such council is not in a position to comment on the matter.

“Hume City Council has a zero tolerance policy to child abuse and is committed to keeping children and young people safe and protected.”
