Time is flying at Sunbury Seniors, where members have been busier than ever — and loving every minute of it.
From competitive carpet bowls to charity crafts and classic cars, the past few months have been packed with activity and good cheer. President Louise Zambello says the club continues to grow, offering something for everyone while building a strong sense of community.
One standout has been the surge in popularity of carpet bowls on Monday and Friday afternoons. Laughter, playful rivalry, and what Louise affectionately calls a “unique set of Sunbury Seniors’ rules” have made each session a hit. A special “Battle of the Sexes” bowls match was a recent highlight — with the women clinching victory in style.
Meanwhile, free monthly lunches — made possible by the Millett Family Community Foundation — have become a much-anticipated tradition. Members enjoy not only hearty meals but also the joy of gathering together, sharing stories, and strengthening connections.
Another staple is the Monday and Friday morning Texas Hold’em poker game, where no money changes hands — only chocolates, and a trophy after 10 weeks of play. Angelo, the club’s ever-popular dealer, brings charisma and skill to the table, keeping everyone engaged.
Creativity also flourishes at the Monday morning knitting and craft sessions, where members make beautiful items for charity.
“The dedication and talent in our group is truly inspiring,” says Ms Zambello.
Classic car enthusiasts have recently joined the mix, adding a dash of nostalgia and lively conversation. Their passion for vintage vehicles has sparked new friendships and fresh interest among the club’s members.
The club has also enjoyed a range of guest speakers, including talks from Centrelink, Ambulance Victoria, and the Sunbury Family History & Heritage Society.
Thanks to support from Hume City Council, Sunbury Seniors have also been hitting the road, with fun and accessible bus excursions becoming a regular feature. More trips are in the works, offering members a chance to explore and unwind together.
But perhaps the most exciting news is the progress of the brand new Sunbury Seniors Centre at 8 O’Shanassy St. With the concrete laid in March, the roof complete, and the bricks now in place, the club is eagerly counting down the days until the big move.
“It’s an exciting time for all of us,” Ms Zambello says. “We’re building not just a new clubhouse, but a stronger, more connected community.”
