Kismet Park Primary School and Sunbury Mens Shed have officially launched a collaborative project to construct a new gaga pit for the school site. Gaga ball is a blend of handball and dodgeball.
The initiative brings together the school and the local mens shed team to share skills, foster intergenerational friendships, and contribute to the local community.
“This partnership is a wonderful example of how different generations can come together to create something meaningful,” said Sam Carlton, acting principal.
“Our school captains recently had the opportunity to visit the local Mens Shed to learn about practical skills they wouldn’t get in a typical primary school classroom, while also building invaluable connections with local mentors”.
The project, which involves the construction of a hexagonal gaga pit, to be 4.75m in width, aims to enhance student space on the Kismet site. The gaga pit will provide a space for fast-paced physical activity that boosts confidence, social skills, and readiness for learning, said Mr Carlton.
“The Men’s shed is a place for men to connect, share skills, and look after each other, and this program extends that mateship to the younger generation,” said Peter Hobbs, project coordinator at the Men’s Shed.
“When the school captains recently visited us it was fantastic to see the enthusiasm from the students, and it gives our members a great sense of purpose to pass on their knowledge”.
