Myna bird battle lands on council’s doorstep

A plea by Hume City Council to the Minister for Agriculture Ros Spence MP for help eradicating the Common Myna bird from the city has been batted back to the council with a note to ‘do it yourself’.

The issue of the feathered fiends was raised by former councillor Jack Medcraft in August. Councillors voted to send Ms Spence a request for help.

Ms Spence has responded saying the birds are not a pest under the Catchment and Land Protection act and there is “…no practical means available for the broad-safe control of the birds”.

Ms Spence suggests council start a community-led action group to tackle the birds.
