Hume City councillors have officially endorsed ‘Sunbury Seniors Hub’ as the name of the town’s soon-to-be-completed seniors facility, following a vote at Monday night’s council meeting (11 August 2025).
The renamed building at 8 O’Shanassy St, currently under construction at a cost of $4.3m and being built by CohenhLeigh, is expected to open its doors by the end of 2025.
The building that was demolished to make way for the new facility was known as the Sunbury Senior Citizens Centre, and has long been a cornerstone for older adults in the community, offering social support, events, and programs for more than five decades.
Council says the new name reflects a broader, more inclusive vision for the redeveloped facility — transforming it from a traditional seniors centre into a welcoming, multipurpose hub designed to meet the evolving needs of both current and future generations of older adults in Sunbury.
The decision follows extensive engagement with the centre’s seven user groups, which include the Sunbury U3A, Sunbury & District Greek Seniors Club, and Australian Filipino Community Services. Collectively, these groups represent over 300 members.
During consultation earlier this year, many participants supported updating the name to better align with the building’s new identity and function. While the words “Sunbury” and “Seniors” were seen as essential to retain, several group members felt that “Senior Citizens” sounded outdated and no longer resonated with today’s or tomorrow’s older adults.
Councillors agreed that the term “Hub” reflects a modern, active space — a place for connection, learning, and access to services under one roof.
With the name now confirmed, council will move forward with signage production as part of the capital works project. No additional costs are expected, as the signage was already factored into the construction budget.
