Push to increase affordable and social housing in Hume

The lack of social and affordable housing is the focus of Hume City and four other regional councils that are calling for greater collaboration with the State and Federal governments to address the issue.

Hume, Darebin, Kingston, Moonee Valley, and Whittlesea city councils, have written to the ministers for planning, housing and infrastructure – namely Harriette Shing (State) and Catherine King (Federal) – saying that “…genuine progress is only possible if they work together”.

Last year, the Victorian Government set a target of building 60,000 new homes across 10 activity centres – which includes Broadmeadows – in the next 10 years.

Hume City Council says in a statement that plans to achieve this need to ensure “we create complete communities, not just additional homes”.

Hume City mayor Naim Kurt says: “Local government has a role to play in providing housing choice through efficient planning services, but solving this issue requires a genuine partnership from all levels of government and industry to resolve.”

The Victorian Planning Authority conducted community consultation for the 10 activity
centres earlier this year and is yet to release a report.
