Sunbury’s Got Talent is a new feature at a kids’ club run by TWCyouth at the Sunbury Youth Centre on Friday nights.
The weekly event started last winter and has grown in popularity thanks in part to a disco on alternate weeks fronted by teenager DJ O-E-O, karaoke, and the latest attraction – a chance for talented youngsters to perform on stage.
TWCyouth’s Carmen Schembri, a trained counsellor and family therapist, together with her husband George and volunteer helpers, started Sunbury Music Nights to give 12 to 18-year-olds somewhere to go and something to do. The Schembris run not-for-profit Together We Can Ministries.
“We initially contacted the council to hire the venue, and when they heard what we were planning they waived the hire fees, we are very grateful for the local council support,” says Ms Schembri.
Sunbury’s Got Talent is for children who want to sing or dance, to showcase their talent and give them an opportunity to perform in front of friends and supporters.

“One of the bands that came along recently was Civilians,” says Ms Schembri.
But beyond the Friday nights, Ms Schembri and her volunteers hope to connect with young people in the community to see what else they can do for them.
“For example, we are connected with people who can help kids who are missing school, help them get their first job, or an apprenticeship,” says Ms Schembri.
Confidential counselling sessions are also offered to those who want to talk or guidance with personal or family issues.
“I’m a trained counsellor and have other people who are connected with what we’re doing, and involved in social work,” says Ms Schembri.
“For instance on a Friday evening if we see one of the youngsters is seeking some privacy, and wanting to have a chat about something, we have access to rooms at the centre for a one-on-one conversation or counselling session.
“Sometimes we have an opportunity to help families as a whole, and that’s a good thing as well.”
Sunbury Music Nights is held every Friday 7pm to 10pm, school terms only (and not Anzac Day 2025), at the Evans St Youth Centre. Email TWC Youth here.
