Teams are being invited to take part in an aquathon contest with a first prize of $10,000. And there are hopes the contest will become an annual event in Sunbury.
Organising the aquathon is Brian Millett who says the competition will see each team member complete a 300m swim followed by a 2km run. Each team of five will include three men and two women.
“Mixing the guys and the girls helps with club bonding and working towards a competitive mixed team,” says Mr Millett.
“It will be a fantastic community event and raise valuable funds for clubs for their season coming up.
“We are looking to all sports clubs in the wider area, and anyone who can get a team of five together, to take part.”
Supporters of the event, to be held on Sunday 16 February 2025 at the Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre, include companies Urban Design, Winslow, RPM, and Hume City Council.
“We have pushed the date of the event out to next year to give everyone a chance to get fit and take part,” says Mr Millett.
The entry cost is $100 for each team with a maximum of two teams from any club. Distinctive Options, a welfare agency, will provide catering on the day.
“This involvement allows their clients and staff to engage with the community and enhance their life skills,” says Mr Millett.
In addition to bringing clubs together, he says the event will attract plenty of spectators.
“It will be a thrilling sporting event,” he says. “We expect plenty of people will be there on the day cheering and supporting their respective teams, which will add to the vibrant community atmosphere.”
Mr Millett says there’s a potential for the aquathon to become an annual event that brings local sporting communities together, inspiring more team members to get involved in future contests.
