Call for town’s museum collection to be given a proper home – Jacksons Hill suggested

A campaign to see a dedicated museum celebrating Sunbury’s rich history got a boost this week from Cllr Trevor Dance.

The George Evans Museum collection, featuring thousands of items – many donated by local families – was put into storage in 2017 when the former museum building was closed by the council.

Since then, the community has been waiting for the museum collection to be given a new permanent home.

Many believed a room would be made available within the Macedon St library / Global Learning Centre when it opened in December 2019.

In July, council announced selected items from the collection, that comprises more than 5,000 exhibits, will be put in a glass display case in the library. An offer that falls well short of what the town had.

At the next meeting of Hume City Council, Cllr Dance will ask fellow members to support his request to revisit the planned location of the exhibits.

He will ask the council to think again and wants it to provide a report by February 2025 that “will identify a fully free-standing building location” – possibly using a building on Jackson Hill, Circular Dr.

Cllr Dance will raise this item at the Monday 9 September meeting of the full council.
