Campaign launched to fight proposed power plant

A campaign group opposing HiQ’s proposed waste-to-energy plant in Bulla has been launched. It is not clear who is behind the No Sunbury Waste Incinerator group, but it has attracted more than 100 members since launching Friday 4 July.

“We are a group of local residents who are highly concerned about the waste-to-energy Incinerator being proposed by HiQ (formerly Hi-Quality),” state the group’s admins.

The proposed plant at 570-600 Sunbury Rd, Bulla, includes a 60m tall chimney. It is currently proposed to take 300,000 tonnes of waste a year – Hume City Council collects about 10,000 tonnes of rubbish a year.

The plant, first floated in January 2024, will create an additional 800 truck movements a day delivering rubbish to the incinerator, and will need 180,000 litres of water a day.

“We are tired of being used as a dumping ground,” states the group. “We, concerned residents of Sunbury, say no to waste incineration.”

The campaign is calling on state and local governments to reject HiQ’s proposal outright, stating “genuine waste reduction strategies – not incineration – should be the priority”.
