Chemical incident at council pool

Nine people were taken to hospital for assessment following a chemical incident at the Broadmeadows Aquatic and Leisure Centre on Friday 20 June.

Hume City Council confirmed a chemical reaction occurred during routine maintenance at the facility.

Emergency services were called and supported staff in managing the situation.

As a precaution, nine people were taken to hospital. According to the council, all affected patrons are recovering and remain in contact with council staff.

Following an assessment by WorkSafe, the site has been declared safe. The centre has since reopened, with swim school lessons and regular programs continuing as scheduled.

Council has launched an internal review to determine the cause of the incident and to prevent a recurrence.

“We thank our staff and emergency services for their swift and professional response, and we appreciate the community’s understanding and support,” a council spokesperson said.
