Council steps up campaign to expose fly tippers

Hume City Council has launched a tougher campaign to crack down on illegal rubbish dumping, promising to publicly name and shame offenders caught in the act.

The move is part of city hall’s ongoing Dob in a Dumper initiative, which encourages residents to report illegal dumping and helps authorities hold offenders to account.

Under the new approach, council chiefs will post weekly updates across its social media and digital platforms featuring those who have been caught and prosecuted for dumping rubbish in public spaces across the city.

The crackdown follows an increased investment in CCTV monitoring across the municipality. The improved surveillance has already led to more offenders being identified and fined, states the council.

Council hopes the campaign not only deter illegal dumping but restore public confidence that offenders are being held accountable for their actions.

Each year, the council spends more than $5m of ratepayers’ money cleaning up illegally dumped rubbish – money council says could be better spent.

Residents are being urged to do their part by reporting offenders. You can Dob in a Dumper by:
