Customer data breach at Greater Western Water

Almost 200 Greater Western Water (GWW) customers may have had their data breached when their bills were sent to the wrong address by the firm. Customer payment details such as credit card and bank account information remain secure, says GWW.

The problem dates back to mid-2024 when the firm adopted a new billing and payment system to replace those used by Western Water and City West Water (the two firms merged to become GWW).

A spokesperson for the firm says of its 630,000 customer accounts, there are 183 potential instances of a customer bill being sent to an outdated or secondary postal or email address.

“We’re sorry that our levels of customer service have not met the high standards we set out to deliver, and that our customers expect from us,” says a spokesperson.

“While we are actively working to correct affected records, this issue is ongoing, and some account information in our system may still be inaccurate.”

“We’re encouraging customers to log onto My GWW to check their name, address and contact details are up to date. If you see any of your details are incorrect, please contact Greater Western Water.”

GWW has reported the issue to the Office of the Victorian Information Commissioner. Find out more about protecting your GWW account.
