Fire danger period begins

Sunbury residents are being urged to prepare their properties ahead of the Fire Danger Period, which begins for the Hume municipality on Monday, 24 November.

The Country Fire Authority (CFA) says now is the time to tidy up around homes and rural properties by clearing dry grass, leaves and other flammable materials, and completing any permitted burn-offs before restrictions come into force.

CFA assistant chief fire officer for District 14, Geoff McGill, said conditions were drying out quickly across the region.

“Now is the time for communities to get ready,” Mr McGill said. “We’re asking residents to clean up around their homes, remove flammable materials, and ensure any private burn-offs are completed safely and responsibly before restrictions come into effect.”

He said that while recent rain had greened up vegetation, the dry soil beneath meant grassfires could still spread quickly.

From November 24, no burning off will be allowed without a written Permit to Burn, available through firepermits.vic.gov.au. Residents conducting burn-offs before that date are asked to register them online or by calling 1800 668 511.
