A plan to identify and promote Hume City’s historical sites of significance has been given the green light by councillors – subject to funding.
The idea was put on the council’s agenda by Cllr Carly Moore and Cllr Naim Kurt last year when they asked council staff to prepare a report on the idea, including costs.
At a meeting on Monday 24 March councillors were presented with four options varying in complexity and cost – from no cost to $47,000.
The idea mirrors an established project showcasing the City of Whittlesea’s 50 Sites of Significance that feature in a leaflet given to Cllr Moore.
“The leaflet showcased 50 sites of significance which got me thinking about all of the significant sites that we have here in Hume,” said Cllr Moore.
“Our city boasts nearly 200 historic sites that tell the rich story of our past from the well-known Ruppertswood Mansion – the birthplace of The Ashes – to Broadmeadows’ Maygar Barracks (the training area for the Australian Light Horse during World War I), and the Woodlands Homestead.
“Our history is vast and varied. We also have lesser known, but culturally significant sites like the Sunbury Earth Rings.
“I’m excited to see the council take steps to share our history. Proudly using it to build stronger connections within our community.”
Proposed options to promote Hume’s sites of significance are:
- A complete multiplatform resource including a brochure, website and interactive map: $46,911
- Website update and brochure without mapping component: $36,830
- Website update only: $25,785
- Continue as is without further investment. Zero cost
The idea will be considered for the council’s 2025/24 annual budget.
Cllr Carly Moore, who was returned to office in November last year, is a candidate in the current federal elections.
