Calls for a direct bus between Sunbury and Broadmeadows have again been raised at Hume City Council, with one residents telling city hall the lack of a service leaves locals cut off from the rest of the municipality.
At a Monday 8 September council meeting, Holly de Kretser, acting chief financial officer, acknowledged a direct bus route was “long identified” as necessary to support people travelling without cars between the two towns.
But stressed the issue was ultimately the responsibility of the Victorian government, not council.
“For council to consider running a shuttle service between Sunbury and Broadmeadows this would need to be considered through council’s budgetary processes,” she said, noting that feasibility studies, a business case and transport data would all be needed before councillors could even vote on funding.
The response is unlikely to satisfy residents who rely on buses. While Hume promotes itself as one municipality, Sunbury remains without a simple public transport link to Broadmeadows — home to council’s main offices and many key services.
