Trashed toilet to flush again

A vandalised public toilet that Hume City Council has kept boarded up for months is to be repaired.

A civic-minded Sunbury Life reader tipped us off to the closed loo in Shields St a few weeks back, saying mourners and visitors to the nearby Sunbury Cemetery are regularly seen queuing to use the one remaining unisex loo.

Following enquiries to council, a spokesperson says the damaged toilet will be repaired in “…the coming weeks”.

“One of the public toilets near Sunbury Cemetery was unfortunately extensively damaged by vandalism in October 2024,” says the spokesperson.

“As the toilet is a proprietary design, the repair needed to be done by the original supplier which has taken longer than we would have liked.

“However, the damaged toilet is one of two unisex toilets and the other one has remained operational, so the reserve has not been without a toilet.

“The repairs are underway and should be completed in the coming weeks.”

The toilet block was first opened in December 2020.
