Sunbury families are in for a treat this summer, with Hume City Council officially announcing the opening of the long-awaited water play area at the Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre.
The council will celebrate the launch with a free community event on Saturday, 1 November, from 9am to 12pm, featuring free entry all day, a kids’ outdoor Zumba session, a free BBQ breakfast, and a colouring competition for children.
The new zero-depth water play zone, designed especially for toddlers and young children, replaces the ageing outdoor toddler pool and represents a major upgrade to the popular Ligar St facility.
The $3.8m project – jointly funded by the council and the Victorian government – includes fun slides, spray loops, jets, fountains, a tipping bucket, aqua dome, and soft-fall flooring, all protected under shade sails – something council is investigating for the city’s playgrounds.
The leisure centre upgrade also improves accessibility, with ramps replacing steps between pools and better pathways throughout the outdoor area. Council has also confirmed that further works, including repainting the 50-metre pool shell, will be completed ahead of the 2025–26 summer season.
Construction on the splash area started in August 2024 and was scheduled to be completed April 2025.

Competition: Kids can collect a colouring sheet from the centre and return their artwork by Thursday 23 October to enter the colouring competition, with the winner announced at the opening event.
