This week’s wild winds saw the Sunbury SES unit responded to 20 separate storm and wind-related incidents, with more than 15 volunteers working to keep the community safe.
Most call-outs involved fallen trees across roads, damage to homes and buildings, and dangerous debris scattered by the gusts.
In one case, SES crews assisted Ambulance Victoria at Sunbury’s Nook, carrying out a rescue using specialist casualty handling equipment to help an injured person.
Sunbury SES unit controller Catherine Bebbington said extreme conditions during Monday and Tuesday tested crews, but volunteers rose to the challenge.
“Our volunteers once again put their training and specialist equipment to work to keep our community safe,” Ms Bebbington said.
“We thank residents for their patience as our crews worked through calls for help during what was an exceptionally busy period across the state.”
The Sunbury unit’s work formed part of a wider response effort, with SES receiving more than 850 calls for help across Victoria in the same 24-hour period. The northern suburbs of Melbourne were among the hardest hit, with some of the state’s busiest units based in the region.
With spring now underway, SES is urging residents to prepare their homes for the storm season ahead. Simple steps include clearing gutters, trimming dead or overhanging branches, and securing outdoor items that could become airborne in strong winds.
