Sunbury’s visitor information desk at the town’s Global Learning Centre is to close as Hume City Council moves to an online offering for those looking for tourist information.
It plans to deliver visitor information via its Instagram account @discoverhume, a move, states a council spokesperson that’s “consistent with industry trends across Victoria”.
The decision, states the spokesperson, follows an external review of council services, which identified that more people are accessing visitor information online than in-person, and the majority of enquires at the Macedon St Visitor Information Centre are not visitor related.
“Using this to understand how we can best service the community moving forward, we intend to wind down the Sunbury Visitor Information Centre as a first step, with the service to cease at the end of June,” said a council spokesperson.
“We will work closely with the current staff and volunteers of the Visitor Information Centre to provide support throughout this transition, including connecting staff to relevant job opportunities that suit their skills and experience, and exploring opportunities for volunteers to take up other volunteer roles within Hume City Council.”
The spokesperson also said there will be increased support for Sunbury businesses, including those with a tourism focus, as a result of the information centre closure.
